Weekly Update August 9 -August 15:

What do swimming, boating, building sandcastles, basketball, food and more food have in common?  The First Christian Church annual summer picnic, of course!  Thanks to our gracious hosts, Larry and Doris Tackett, church members enjoyed all the best of summer fun at Elk Lake, Sunday evening.  The kids were swimming, building sandcastles while Larry treated the adults to boatrides on the lake. In the meantime, Liz, Ann, and Mitzi assembled all the food for a delicious picnic dinner.  The evening ended with a nice gentle rain, but that didn't stop some of the youth from playing a freindly game of basketful in the drizzle.

Choir practice is Wednesday evening at 6:30 and the church board will meet the same evening this week at 7:30.  Laundry and dish soap, as well as men's jeans and girls clothing sizes 7 and 8 are still being collected this month for our "Meeting the Needs"  mission.

Weekly Update August 2 -August 8:

Come join the fun! The annual church picnic will be Sunday, August 15th at Elk Lake.  The meal will be served at 6:00 p.m.  Parents and kids may come early at 4:30 to swim or fish if they like.  Attendees should stop at the entrance gate and let the attendant know they are with the First Christian Church group.  The meal is pot luck with the Dorcas Sunday School ladies providing the meat.

Don't forget the Meeting the Needs Ministry items for August.  Laundry and dish soap are needed as well as men's jeans.  There is still a need for girls clothing sizes 7 and 8.  Receptacles for the items are located in the Common Room  at the Church.

Weekly Update July 26 -August 1:

First Christian's worship service on Sunday was a celebration of Vacation Bible School.  This year's theme was Hero Headquarters and the week was action packed with 53 children registered.  Our own VBS caped crusaders led the worship as we opened with the traditional VBS pledges and music.  The VBS group provided the special music on stage with "H-E-R-O, God Is My Hero".  The Rev. Dann's message was titled, "Heroes and Saints." He shared unsung heroes he has known and how they quietly provided just what was needed to "save the day."  A closing VBS ceremony was enjoyed by the congregation at the home of Pat and Buck Beverly on Sunday evening. Events included swimming, a picnic meal and vespers.   August items for our Meeting the Needs Ministry are Laundry and Dish Soap.  There is also still a need for jeans, especially men's sizes and girls clothing in general in sizes 7/8.   The annual church picnic is coming soon on August 15th, 6:00 p.m. at Elk Lake.

 Weekly Update July 19 -25:

Twenty-three children received blessings during worship service on Sunday at First Christian.  Pizza Man rushed in with a special delivery for Vacation Bible School.  Realizing he had arrived one day early, Pizza Man took the opportunity to remind all the kids that VBS was Monday through Friday this week, beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m.  This year's theme is hero headquarters, where kids join forces with God.  VBS students will be studying unlikely heroes of the Bible and how they made a difference.  The Rev. Dann's message centered around Jonah, an unlikely hero, as he unwillingly preached to the citizens of Nineveh telling them they would be destroyed.  The citizens repented and asked God's forgiveness.  God forgave the citizens of Nineveh, just as we are to forgive others. We are still collecting laundry soap or donations toward laundry soap for the Meeting the Needs ministry in July.  For the week of July 19-23, 2010, the Week of Compassion offering provided flood relief to victims in Oklahoma, Kentucky, and China.  The annual church picnic will be held August 15th at Elk Lake.

WELCOME To The First Christian Church Web Site

This site is intended as a tool for our membership development.
On the pages behind this one are others designed for information
about our church as we move into the high tech world in which
we live.  We estimate that 80% of our membership own
computers and have access to the internet.

You are invited to spend some time exploring the site via the
pages listed.  We are very interested in your comments about
how we can improve this site keeping in mind it is not intended
as an evangelism tool.  It is primarily a way of improving
     communication within the membership.

  ABOUT OUR MINISTER

      If You Call Me "Bill"

Hello.  My name is Dann Masden.  I am sitting in your minister's office.
The very same office in which you saw Brother Bill every Sunday and on
those times when you needed pastoral care or just a good ear and
shoulder.  It is odd for both of us for me to be here.  Though I have
heard of Owenton through the years, I confess I know very little about
your community.  In spite of the fact that your congregation is one of
Kentucky's strongest Disciple churches, I have heard no gossip about
you.  So I come to this office with expectancy and joy.  I look forward to
getting to know each of you better and to work with you while the
Search Committee completes its task of discerning whom God will call to
sit here on a more permanent basis.  Until that time.......

You and I are beginning a new ministry.  We will learn each other's
name.  And if you slip and call me "Brother Bill" rather than "Dann" I
won't be offended.  In fact I will be complimented since you are
associating me with your pastor; someone who gave you love and
support for ten years.  Now if you call me "Kevin" or "Rusty" or heaven
forbid - "Proctor" -- I will worry a little more about what that may mean -
      for both of us!

To help you get to know me, I am retired from a ministry in Paducah,
Kentucky at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  I began my
ministry at the age of 20 outside of Nicholasville at the Bethany
Christian Church.  I have two married daughters, Deanna and Mandye.
Deanna earned her M.B.A. at UK and now lives in the Houston-Galveston
area of Texas.  She works in marketing and communications.  One of
her more interesting accounts is the Space Coalition working with NASA.
She and her husband are the parents of our 4 month old grandson
Mason.  My other daughter is pastoring the Burgin Christian Church in
Mercer County.  They have two children Ben who just turned 8 and
Callie who is 5-1/2.  Mandye began her ministry in the same small
congregation outside of Nicholasville as I did.  Bethany survived two
      Masdens and is still functioning.

My wife Debbie is from the large metropolitan area of Paint Lick,
Kentucky.  Her parents still live there on the Madison County side of the
creek.  Debbie is a high school mathematics teacher at Boyle County
High School.  I have served churches in Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky.
I have been trained in Interim Ministry and have served the Harrodsburg
and Shelbyville churches most recently.  I grew up just south of
Louisville in the small town of Shepherdsville.  As a youth I was
influenced by a group of academics in the big city.  They drew me in to
their community which many people in this area consider to be a
controversial influence.  So I confess to you that they did leave their
mark on my life.  You see I am a University of Louisville graduate.  But
I did later see the light and I enrolled at Lexington Theological Seminary.
I think through the support of my wife and daughter both UK graduates,
I have been able to adjust.  I do still cheer for UofL over UK.  Other
than that I am relatively normal.

I look forward to meeting you.  I anticipate a great time together brief
though it may be.  Join me in keeping our church and our Search
      Committee in our prayers.

      In Christ's Ministry Together,
      Dann Masden
